BARCELONA 5 REAL MADRID 0
Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid were ripped apart as Barcelona romped to victory in El Clasico. And Real's night ended in complete humiliation as Ronaldo sparked a massive brawl by shoving Barca boss Pep Guardiola and Sergio Ramos was sent off in injury time for a shocking tackle on Argentina star Messi.
While goals by Xavi, Pedro, David Villa — who got two — and sub Jeffren sent the Nou Camp fans into raptures, the Special One slumped into the dark and gloomy shadows of his dugout. No tricks, no provocation, no solutions, no inspiration.
No wonder. It was the first time Mourinho had lost a match by more than three goals.
His worst defeats before last night were a quartet of three-nils with Benfica, Porto, Inter and Chelsea — at Middlesbrough in 2006.
Mourinho admitted: "One of the two teams played at absolute top level and the other very badly. But it's a defeat — not a humiliation.
"Last week we were a point ahead in La Liga, now we are two behind so no big deal.
"I knew before tonight that Barcelona were the finished article but this Madrid team is a long way from being that.
"Last year I came here with Inter and lost but came back and beat them to get to the Champions League final.
"I want my players to show character, to recover their pride and self-belief quickly. It's easy to cry tears of joy when you win big trophies but when you take a five-goal beating then the absolute necessity is to show hunger to get back and train, improve and fight back."
Guardiola's Barcelona won their fifth straight clash with Madrid over the last two and a half years, and the Catalans have spanked their biggest rivals 16-2 on aggregate during the remarkable run of domination which Mourinho was hired to end.
But the weeks and weeks of simmering build-up while the Madrid press hailed Mourinho this time left Guardiola's players ready to surge out of their cages like young lions after a stray goat.
Just six minutes had gone when Messi gave notice that this was going to be special.
Darting around the Madrid penalty box he lifted the ball over everyone, keeper Iker Casillas included, only for the ball to bounce back off the far post.
But, moments later, Barcelona ripped through the Madrid defence once again. This time Andres Iniesta's shot deflected and Xavi performed a remarkable juggling trick to scoop the ball over Casillas for the first goal.
Then Villa roared past Ramos at right-back and his cross left Pedro — the man whose dad is still a petrol pump attendant on Tenerife — with a simple tap-in.
Seventeen minutes gone and it was already looking like a massacre.
Ronaldo tried to summon a reaction by shoving Guardiola when the Barca coach first played 'come and get it' with the ball and then threw it away. That sparked the first brawl of the night... but not the last.
But Messi's genius kept on sending in team-mates and his 54th-minute pass set up Villa to make it 3-0.
And three became four in a moment of utter and absolute magic just three minutes later.
Messi, yet again, split the Madrid defence with a pass and Villa impishly drew Casillas before dinking it through the keeper's legs.
The night looked like it would end with Gerard Pique's taunting hand up in the air, five fingers splayed to the stadium, as he celebrated Jeffren's goal in injury time.
Instead Ramos scythed down Messi and then shoved Carles Puyol over face first as he was being red-carded.
Guardiola said: "This wasn't a definitive result when it comes to who will win the league but we did define for the entire world how it is we like to play football.
"So for this display and for what reactions people will have to it we are all very proud"
